traditional tofu tacos

peppers We love tacos! Asian fusian tacos, roasted veggie tacos, and of course traditional tacos. This recipe is our take on classic tacos. It packs a lot of flavor into the tofu and creates a great texture. The bite sized pieces fit perfectly in the taco shell and taste amazing with the fajita style peppers and onions. We topped our tacos with our guacamole and a refreshing pineapple salsa that was a perfect balance for the smoky and spicy tofu. This taco recipe goes a long way so expect to feed a crowd, or have leftovers. The tofu tastes great in quesadillas, taco salads or scrambled for nacos and the best part is it is super easy to make!

Makes 5 servings or 10 Tacos

1 container of extra firm tofu
2 tablespoons taco seasoning*
1 small red onion, sliced
1 bell pepper, sliced
olive oil


Slice the tofu into Β½ inch slices and press the excess water out of the tofu by placing the slices between two towels and covering with a flat, heavy object. Let the tofu press for about 20 minutes.

Pre-heat the oven to 350Β°F

Heat a large, oiled skillet on the stove to medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions and peppers. Cook on medium-high heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Then reduce heat to medium-low and continue to cook the onions and peppers until they become caramelized and tender, be sure to stir them from time to time.

While the onions and peppers are reducing, cut the tofu into Β½ inch squares, and place on an oiled baking sheet. Bake the tofu for 20 minutes, flipping the tofu at 10 minutes. Once the tofu is finished baking, transfer it to a large, oiled skillet set to medium-high heat. Toss the tofu to equally coat in olive oil and let brown for 5 minutes. tofu_Tacos

In a small bowl, mix equal parts taco seasoning and warm water. Increase to high heat, and once the skillet is nice and hot, pour in the taco seasoning and quickly coat the tofu in the seasoning. Let the tofu simmer until the water is gone. We prefer to make our tacos with corn tortilla shells, but encourage you to get creative. You can wrap these ingredients in a burrito shell, a big leafy green (we like romaine) or make a taco salad. The possibilities are endless.

taco seasoning
Makes about 10 Tofu Tacos
1/2 tablespoon chili powder
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon onion powder
1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/8 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon paprika
3/4 teaspoons ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

This recipe is so simple to make and is a great way to avoid unwanted preservatives. Mix together and store in a glass jar to have homemade taco seasoning whenever you may need it.
